As Thugs Bar Freshly Sworn-In Rivers LG Chairmen From Entering Their Offices, There Is Gunfire.

Numerous local government areas (LGAs) in Rivers State have reported hearing a lot of gunfire as armed thugs try to bar freshly sworn-in LG chairmen from entering their council offices.

The state governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, swore in the 23 elected LG chairs after the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, or RSIEC, conducted local government elections on Saturday.

In a similar incident, police officers were directed to leave LG premises throughout the state by the Inspector General of Police, according to a statement from Grace Iringe-Koko, the public relations officer for the state police command.

On Monday morning, however, rumors circulated that a political organization unhappy with the results of the LGA elections had organized 20 young people per ward to prevent the newly elected councillors and chairmen from entering their respective council secretariats.

As of the time of publication, there had been reports of heavy shooting at the Khana Secretariat in Bori, the Ikwerre Local Government Secretariat in Isiokpo, and several other locations throughout the state.
