The proposal to establish 31 additional states in the nation was made by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review on Thursday.
The Nigerian state will consist of 67 sub-national administrations if the idea is approved.
In the absence of Speaker Mr. Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu presided over Thursday’s plenary session and read a letter that included the proposal for new states.
Six additional states for North Central, four for the North East, five for the North West, five for the South East, four for the South-South, and seven for the South West were suggested by the Kalu-chaired group.
“The committee proposes the creation of 31 new states,” the letter said in part. This section, as revised, lists particular conditions that must be met in order to start the state creation process. These conditions include the following:
- A new state with new borders
Only with the backing of at least the third majority of members would an act of the National Assembly intended to establish a new state be approved.
- The National Assembly receives the House of Representatives, the House of Assembly for the region, and the Local Government Council for the region.
“Local government supporters who support the establishment of more local government areas are only reminded that this procedure is governed by Section 8 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution, as amended.
In particular, the results of the referendum’s State Houses of Assembly votes must be sent to the National Assembly in order to fulfill state demands, as stipulated in Section 8(3) of the Constitution.
Resubmitted proposals must strictly adhere to the requirements. Deliver the whole memorandum proposal in three hard copies to the Committee Secretariat in Room H331, House of Representatives, White House, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
Additionally, electronic subcopies must be provided to info.hccr.gov.nj, the Committee’s email address. Please call 08069-232381 to reach the Committee Clerk or for more information.
The committee would only take into consideration recommendations that adhere to the established parameters and is still dedicated to supporting implementation efforts that are in keeping with the requirements of the Constitution. The Clerk of the Committee on Constitutional Review is the source of this.
