Doyin Okupe, who used to be a presidential spokesman, said he would never back the former governor of Anambra State again.
Okupe was in charge of Obi’s presidential campaign until he had to quit because he was found guilty of money theft. He then quit the Labour Party after the election.
Okupe has become a well-known backer of President Bola Tinubu’s government since he quit the Labour Party.
Even though Tinubu is from the South-West, Okupe didn’t agree with Obi when he said that the economy doesn’t help the area much.
Obi said in the video that went viral, “Let’s talk about what’s going on today.” It costs about N100,000 for rice. We have no idea where we’re going. “Now it’s our turn,” he said. “He’s a Yoruba man. Ask the people in Ogun: Is there a cheaper place for you to buy bread?”
Okupe said on Monday’s episode of Politics Today on Channels Television, “When Obi said that, it was an insult to us.” I’m Yoruba, and I left everything to follow Obi.
“Obasanjo broke away from his group of friends and family for the first time to support Obi.”
“I don’t feel bad about supporting Peter Obi.” I can’t do it again now, though. Why did I do it? Because we both agreed that a president from the South had to come to power.
“I was asked where a southern president should come from if one had to emerge.” I said the southeast.
“If these well-known Yoruba people were on your side, why bring us down in public now?” It’s not right.
Okupe also said he would never attack Peter Obi in public, recognizing the important part he played in the former presidential candidate’s political rise.
“I can’t hate Peter Obi because I care about him very much.” Since I worked on Peter Obi and am a part of the team that made him successful, I can’t attack or bring down that house in public.
But you know, when some of us are offended, especially when it comes down to a zone issue, I mean when you call out the whole Yoruba race, I am an old statesman and a Yoruba man first and foremost.
“There’s no point in living if I can’t tell the truth at this age.” Peter Obi said something wrong when he said that they should ask people in Ogun State if they can find cheaper bread.
“When Bola Tinubu said emilokan, he wasn’t talking to the whole country or at a rally. He was telling APC delegates in the Ogun State government building who were going to the APC convention to vote for him.”
