During the BRICS meeting in Kazan, Russia, António Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN, made a strong case for peace in the conflict-torn areas of Gaza, Lebanon, and Ukraine.

Leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa all attended the meeting, which gave Guterres a great chance to stress how important it is to be diplomatic and work together.

Guterres called for a quick end to the fighting and the release of all hostages in Gaza, stressing how important it was to protect civilian lives. He also stressed how important it was to make sure that humanitarian help got to the people who needed it the most.

Guterres laid out a multifaceted plan for lasting peace, which included a two-state option to end the Israeli occupation and create a separate Palestinian state. Following the UN Charter and international law, he also called for the UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to be put into action in Lebanon and for a fair peace to be made in Ukraine.

Guterres was joined by BRICS leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in calling for peace and rejecting violence. Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, said that Israel was committing “genocide and ethnic cleansing” and urged the rest of the world to step in right away.

Guterres ended by stressing that promoting peace and security is the job of everyone in the international community. He told world leaders that they should follow the values and principles in the UN Charter, protect sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political freedom, and show that they mean what they say.

The whole world is holding their breath, hoping that Guterres’ passionate plea will lead to real action and start a new age of peace and cooperation.
