Globally, The Number Of HMPV Virus Cases Is increasing. Here Are The Symptoms, Diagnosis, And Other Important Information.

China’s Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak has raised alarm around the world, leading nations like India to keep a careful eye on the virus and its spread. HMPV instances have also been noticeably rising in Malaysia. To assess the increasing number of cases, the Indian Health Ministry convened a conference on Saturday. Authorities said there isn’t any cause for concern at the moment.

Videos posted on social media allegedly depict overcrowded hospitals and overworked healthcare systems in China, which is now experiencing an outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV). Concerns have been voiced by health specialists over HMPV, a respiratory virus that affects several Asian nations.

China has, however, dismissed the flu pandemic and declared that travel is safe within the nation. Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) reports from China are not alarming, according to India’s health ministry, which has reiterated that they are keeping an eye on the situation.

What is the cause of China’s HMPV viral surge?
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have identified Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) as belonging to the Pneumoviridae family, which also includes respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). HMPV was discovered in 2001. Similar to a cold or flu, the virus frequently causes upper and lower respiratory infections.

The CDC states that although HMPV can infect persons of any age, it is more likely to infect young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

Symptoms of the HMPV virus
Coughing, a runny or congested nose, fever, sore throat, and in more severe cases, wheezing or trouble breathing, are typical signs of HMPV, according to the CDC. Under some circumstances, the infection may aggravate asthma symptoms, cause pneumonia, or cause bronchitis.
Who’s in danger?
Individuals with compromised immune systems or long-term respiratory disorders like asthma or COPD, as well as children under five, particularly babies, and elderly adults, especially those over 65, are more vulnerable.

How does HMPV proliferate?
The respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, close contact such as handshakes or touching, and contact with infected surfaces followed by contact with the mouth, nose, or eyes are the ways that HMPV is spread.

In what ways can you avoid it?
The following actions are recommended by the CDC to reduce the risk of HMPV and other respiratory infections:
Frequently wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.
Don’t put unwashed hands on your face.
When there is an outbreak, wear masks in busy areas.
When ill, stay at home to stop the infection from spreading.
Clean surfaces that are touched often on a regular basis.

Diagnostics and testing
According to the CDC, an HMPV infection is often verified by:

Direct viral genome identification using the nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT).
Using enzyme immunoassay or immunofluorescence, viral antigens in respiratory secretions can be directly detected. Unless there is an outbreak or there are serious symptoms, routine testing is rarely performed.

Alternatives for treatment
For HMPV, there is no particular antiviral medication or vaccination. According to the Cleveland Clinic, symptom relief is the main goal of management:

-Drink plenty of water and get enough sleep.

-For fever, congestion, and pain, take over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.

-Severe instances can necessitate hospitalization for intravenous fluids or oxygen therapy.

Present-day viewpoint
Despite its role in the rise in respiratory illnesses, HMPV is neither a novel virus nor an impending pandemic hazard. Particularly when people re-expose to diseases following COVID-19 lockdowns, seasonal increases are common.

When to seek medical help
The Cleveland Clinic advises speaking with a doctor if symptoms:

-If things get worse in a few days

-Include cyanosis (bluish skin) or breathing difficulties.

-Coexist with long-term medical disorders like asthma or COPD.

In what ways does HMPV differ from COVID-19?
There are many similarities between HMPV and COVID-19, including the fact that both viruses spread through respiratory droplets and induce respiratory symptoms such coughing, fever, congestion, sore throat, and shortness of breath.

In severe circumstances, hospitalization may be necessary. In contrast to COVID-19, which can spread year-round due to changing variations, HMPV usually peaks in the winter and spring, according to an NDTV article.

Research indicates that once COVID-19 limits were removed, HMPV cases in some areas increased threefold. Lockdowns reduced viral exposure, which probably decreased immunity and led to a spike in respiratory illnesses once measures were loosened.
