After serving with the Peoples Democratic Party since its founding in 1999, Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North, has resigned.
The senator expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the party in a resignation letter dated January 30 that was sighted on Friday. The letter was addressed to the party leadership in Ward 8, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, and it stated that the main reasons for his departure were irreconcilable factions and deep divisions.
“The party’s severe disagreements and factionalization are the main reasons for my resignation. It has become more challenging to promote unity and further the interests of our people as a whole because of this fragmentation,” Nwoko said.
The senator also bemoaned recent occurrences that highlighted the internal conflict inside the party.
According to him, “the top party functionaries degenerated to the lowest levels just this week, precisely on the 29th of January, by physically fighting themselves arising from the stated factions, which have become irreconcilable.”
Nwoko expressed gratitude to the PDP for giving him the forum he needed to interact directly with his constituents during the 2022–2023 senatorial elections.
He did, however, reaffirm his resolve to keep the pledges he made during his campaign, which he feels has been hampered by the Delta State party’s current setup.
Unfortunately, these pledges have not been able to be fulfilled due to the party’s existing structure in our state. After giving it some thought, I’ve decided that in order to fulfill my responsibilities to my people, I must leave the party,” he continued.
Nwoko reaffirmed his commitment to serve his constituents and furthering their interests in spite of his departure.
As he said goodbye to the PDP, he reassured his constituents and all party members of his unwavering commitment to statesmanship.
The senator emphasized that his choice was made with the best interests of his constituents in mind. He is also the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Sports Development and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriations.
He continued, “I am still dedicated to the advancement and prosperity of our state and country, and my decision is based on what is best for the people I serve.”
Nwoko wished the PDP ongoing success in its future endeavors and thanked the party’s members and leadership for their support throughout the years.
