No Fewer Than 9 Lives Lost As Boat Capsizes In Sokoto

In Birjingo Village, Goronyo Local Government of Sokoto, no fewer than nine lives was lost as a boat conveying them capsized.

According to ASP Muhammed Sadiq, PPRO in Sokoto, the incident occurred on Wednesday.

He said:

“The number of passengers traveling in the boat has yet to be ascertained, as a search team is still working to recover other victims’ bodies.

“Immediately the accident occurred, many of the passengers were rescued and three bodies were later recovered.

“Today (Thursday), six other bodies were recovered and search is still on to recover others,”

According to an eyewitness the boat was conveying about 30 passengers when the incident happened.

However, Alhaji Zakari Shinaka, The Chairman of Goronyo Local Government area also confirmed the incident stating that immediately the incident occurred the council engaged about 50 local divers who eventually succeeded in rescuing some of the victims alive.

He went on further to advise boat operators to avoid overloading of their boats.
