Political Succession Disputes Are Brought On By Rumors Of Paul Biya’s Death, The President Of Cameroon.

The country’s succession plans have become the subject of political speculation and controversy due to rumors of Cameroonian President Paul Biya’s death.

In an open letter to Samuel Mvondo Ayolo, the director of the Civil Cabinet, attorney Christian Ntimbane voiced concerns regarding Biya’s prolonged absence following the China-Africa Summit, which took place from September 4–6, 2024. The 91-year-old president’s health has been the subject of much conjecture due to the lack of official updates; some have suggested he is either recovering in Switzerland or is in the hospital in France.

Ntimbane has demanded openness and asked the administration to provide details about the president’s circumstances, stating, “If he is on vacation, say so.” Say so too if he is ill, in an effort to allay public fears. Because Biya’s absence has dominated media coverage, voters’ concerns about political stability following his 42-year reign have increased.

Opinion is divided on sites like X (previously Twitter). While some users think Biya’s eldest son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, is being groomed by France to become his successor, others think Biya’s long-term control over Cameroon is about to end.

Cameroon Concord claims that since Biya’s brother-in-law, Robert Nkili, is set to take over as president in an acting capacity, there may already be a political structure in place to ease the transition. Opposition figures like Maurice Kamto, nevertheless, would band together to oppose any effort at dynastic succession and advocate for democratic changes.
