Solomon Adeola, a senator from the Ogun West Senatorial District; Oladipupo Adebutu, a Peoples Democratic Party candidate for governor of Ogun in 2023; and the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress have joined other notable Nigerians in lamenting the passing of the late Adewunmi Onanuga, a member of the House of Representatives who represented the Remo federal constituency.
After a brief illness, Onanuga, 59, who represented Ogun State’s Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency, passed away on Wednesday.
Adeola said in a condolence message to the legislator’s family on Thursday that the late Onanuga was a capable lawmaker who will be missed by her constituency and family as well as by the entire Nigerian and Ogun State populace.
“I was shocked and saddened to learn of Hon. Onanuga’s passage,” the senator stated. She was an unafraid public worker and politician who always prioritized the needs of the people in all political calculations.
Therefore, it is not shocking that she was elected as a key official of the National Assembly and reelected. Her services would be missed by the country throughout this period.
Adeola prayed for her soul to rest in peace and for her family and friends to have the strength to deal with the irreversible loss of a cherished politician.
In a statement released on Thursday by his media assistant, Afolabi Orekoya, Adebutu praised the legislator affectionately as an outstanding leader whose tremendous contributions demonstrated her passion to public service and her people.
Although she ran on the APC platform, he emphasized that her leadership style and enthusiasm for community development had a lasting influence not only in her constituency but also throughout Ogun State and Nigeria.
Hon. Onanuga was a trailblazer and an inspiration to many, particularly women who aspired to leadership positions, Adebutu said.
“For years to come, her steadfast dedication to her constituents’ welfare and her capacity to effect significant change will be remembered.”
In addition to expressing his condolences to the lawmaker’s immediate family and the residents of the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency, the PDP BoT member prayed for the legislator’s strength and consolation during this difficult time.
In a similar vein, Ogun APC called the death of the vivacious politician a “rude shock that is too heavy for our party to bear” in a statement released in Abeokuta on Thursday and signed by State Publicity Secretary Tunde Oladunjoye.
“Our party extends its condolences to the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, the party leadership, and the family and associates of the late Onanuga, who remained a devoted and active party supporter until his death,” the statement continued.
“Ijaya,” as she was affectionately known, embodied humility, dedication, and duty to the party and her constituents while she was alive.
She was an admirable and highly recommended politician who gave hope to the majority of the party, not just the female members.
While serving as the Deputy Chief Whip at the House of Representatives, she was an excellent ambassador who represented both her federal constituency and Ogun State as a whole.
“We ask God to give her family and friends the strength to deal with this irreversible loss.”
