The assault trial of Seun Kuti has been halted due to the absence of a magistrate.

The trial of Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti was halted on Monday, July 3, due to the absence of Yaba Magistrates’ Court Chief Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun.

The musician had been charged by authorities with assaulting a police officer. He allegedly committed the crime on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State on May 13.

He was charged with slapping an inspector after driving recklessly on the bridge and purposefully impeding a moving police car.

The case was postponed until July 3 after the court denied the police’s request to formally arraign Kuti. Magistrate Olatubosun stated at the time that she needed to consult with the DPP before advancing with the case.

Kuti, his attorneys, and the prosecution

Kuti and his counsel, as well as the prosecution team, were present in court, but the case could not be heard since Olatubosun was not there. She was reported to have resumed her administrative leave and was consequently missing from court today.
