There was palpable tension on Tuesday as police officers clashed with some students of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State.
Footages of the incident, which went viral, showed people scampering to safety as gunshots were heard.
However, a security source said a team of police operatives from Osogbo was in the Ogberin area to raid a criminal hideout.
The source noted that while attempting to make an arrest, some students recorded the operation with their phones as the incident took place and some of the policemen went to meet one of the students.
“The student fled and ran into the campus but the police operatives chased him and arrested him and other students on the premises of the institution, and took them to ‘A’ Division, Pere, Ede.
“Unplanned activity, however, ensued while the police were trying to take the students out. They eventually took them to the station,” he said.
Sola Lawal, the Public Relations Officer of the polytechnic, also confirmed the incident.
The institution’s spokesperson, however, stated that normalcy has returned and that the campus is calm.
“Some policemen came from Osogbo to work at Ogberin area, but Hassan Ayobami, an Office Technology Management student, brought out his phone and started recording what was happening.
“The police chased him into the school campus where he was apprehended. The Commissioner of Police has ordered his men to release him. He is back in the lecture room, although his colleagues attempted to stop the arrest. I want to assure you that normalcy has returned. The student has been released.”Lawal said.
Also, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, said: “Policemen were in the area to arrest some suspected criminals. While the operation was on, some students started recording, taking pictures and saying all sorts of things to the police.
“The men then attempted to arrest one of the students and his colleagues attempted to stop the arrest. However, normalcy has returned the affected area.”
