The Nigeria Police Force’s Police Anti-Money Laundering Units were established by Inspector-General of Police IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM. He appointed CP Hyacinth Azuka Edozie, a well-known financial expert, and officers with the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) to head the units in each State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) throughout the nation.
This program is a calculated attempt to enhance the police’s contribution to national security, particularly in the fight against financial crimes. It is also essential for combating the complex ways that terrorist groups and other criminal organizations finance their operations.
By stopping and identifying illegal financial operations that could jeopardize the stability of the nation, the establishment demonstrates the Force’s dedication to protecting national security. Additionally, it improves the ability of law enforcement organizations to combat different security risks, particularly the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), which is advancing its global supervision functions.
The police recently made large arrests in the states of Kano and Nasarawa, which is evidence of their determination to reduce financial crimes and improve national security. Operatives acting on reliable intelligence captured Nura Ibrahim on December 8, 2024, in Gwale, Kano, and found counterfeit currency totaling N129,542,823,000, broken down into 3,366,000 counterfeit US dollars, 51,970 counterfeit CFA franc, and 1,443,000 counterfeit Naira. Usman Abdullahi and Muhammad Muntari, two accomplices, were also arrested as a result of the arrest.
