Every 16th of June is set apart by the African Union as the Day of the African Child (DAC). This day was created to commemorate the 16th of June 1976, a day when students in Soweto, South Africa, who collectively rose and marched in protest against the apartheid-inspired education in the country were brutally murdered.
To celebrate this day requires deep introspection and dedication to the course of addressing the challenges faced by all African children in Africa. The theme for this year’s Day of the African child is “Access to a Child-friendly Justice System in Africa”, and it was adopted by the Executive Council of the African Union, during its 34th Ordinary Session on 7th and 8th of February, 2019.
As a result of the current Pandemic, however, the event will be held via a webinar. This event which looks at what makes for a Child-friendly Justice system, and how it can be adopted and practiced in Africa, will also create a platform whereby children, policymakers, child right organizations and so on can dialogue on the challenges facing the availability of equal access to Child-friendly justice systems to all group of African Children.
