Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, only suggested implementing a 12-year basic education program, the Ministry of Education confirmed on Friday.
According to the ministry, there was no instant policy change on the subject, despite allegations to the contrary.
According to a number of media sources, a new policy that would do away with the Junior and Senior Secondary School system was already in place.
The Federal Ministry of Education emphasized in a statement issued by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press, that the National Council on Education would examine the idea prior to a final decision.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, did not immediately propose a change in policy during the Extraordinary National Council on Education Meeting, which took place in Abuja on February 6, 2025. Instead, he made a suggestion for discussion. The plan aims to keep the present 6-3-3 framework while implementing a 12-year mandatory education.
“Removing the examination barrier between JSS and SSS is a crucial component of this idea, enabling pupils to advance without the need for external assessments at that point. This is still up for additional discussion and consultation, though.
“Over the following eight months, the ministry will conduct extensive stakeholder engagements, consulting with state governments, education officials, teachers, parents, and other important stakeholders to guarantee a well-informed choice. At the October 2025 National Council on Education meeting, the ultimate decision regarding the adoption of this reform will be taken.
The public is urged by the ministry to reject unfounded rumors that JSS and SSS have been discontinued. The federal government is still dedicated to enacting laws that improve access to high-quality education while conforming to international best practices.
