David Lynch had a remarkable instinct for spotting females with the potential to become leading ladies and achieve greater success. Among them is Lara Flynn Boyle, who as Donna Hayward in Lynch’s Twin Peaks, an ABC series from the early 1990s.
After Lynch passed away at the age of 78, the actress told Deadline in a statement on Thursday, “There goes the true Willy Wonka of filmmaking.” “I feel like I’ve been given the opportunity to collaborate with him. He will be sorely missed.
In an October 1990 Rolling Stone cover featuring her, fellow Twin Peaks actress Sherilynn Fenn, and Mädchen Amick, Boyle announced the arrival of “The Women of Twin Peaks.”
In Twin Peaks, a community of wackos in the Northwest, Boyle’s character Donna was a strong, straight-arrow. In the days leading up to Laura Palmer’s murder, the naive high school girl spent time with her best friend. Because of their friendship, FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) and Sheriff Harry S. Truman (Michael Ontkean) brought Donna in for interrogation.
In Lynch’s Twin Peaks sequel, the 1992 prequel film Fire Walk With Me, which focused on Palmer’s early years prior to her murder, and the massive 2017 Showtime continuation series, Boyle did not return to the part of Donna.
After Twin Peaks, Boyle’s career took off, and she went on to star in 132 episodes of The Practice, ABC’s David E. Kelley legal series, for which she received a nomination for an Emmy for Supporting Actress Drama. She starred in films including Men in Black 2, Red Rock West, Alan Rudolph’s Afterglow, and the Andrew Fleming romantic comedy Threesome shortly after Twin Peaks.
