Democratic lawmakers Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Tim Walz expressed their criticism of Hinchcliffe.
Hinchcliffe made remarks that perpetuated stereotypes about Latinos, employed racist tropes regarding black individuals, and referred to Palestinians in a derogatory manner while invoking a negative stereotype about Jews.
Hinchcliffe has a track record of attracting attention due to his controversial remarks. In 2021, he employed a racial slur during a comedy performance and declined to issue an apology. Hinchcliffe defended his remarks on X, stating, “These individuals lack a sense of humor.” He asserted his affection for Puerto Rico and his intention to vacation there; however, Ocasio-Cortez responded by indicating that his remarks reflected a deficiency in authentic understanding and respect.
The debate regarding Hinchcliffe’s jokes emerged concurrently with Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny’s endorsement of Kamala Harris for the presidency. Harris introduced initiatives designed to assist Puerto Rico, receiving endorsements from Jennifer Lopez and various other prominent figures.

Bad Bunny’s endorsement of Harris was regarded as noteworthy, considering his substantial following and impact within the Latinx community. The rapper shared several videos featuring Harris discussing the island, her proposals to assist residents, and her criticisms of Trump’s response to Hurricane Maria, which resulted in nearly 3,000 fatalities in 2017.
A significant number of prominent celebrities have already endorsed Harris. Bad Bunny’s comments seemed to be strategically prepared, and he did not respond to Hinchcliffe’s remarks. Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin addressed his fans, stating, “this is what they think of us,” and encouraged them to support Harris in the upcoming vote.
