Since the winter vacation, the German team has dropped their last four games across all competitions.
Last year’s lost finalists suffered their third Champions League loss of the season on Tuesday, falling to the Italian team 2-1.
In order to go to the round of 16, Dortmund must defeat Shakhtar Donetsk in their penultimate league phase match and hope for other favorable outcomes.
They are now in 10th place in the Bundesliga, seven points off the top four, and in risk of missing out on qualifying for the Champions League next season after a run of three home losses to begin 2025.
“Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season,” said 36-year-old Sahin, who played for the team twice.
“I wish this special club all the best.”
Edin Terzic left Dortmund after their Champions League final loss to Real Madrid, and Sahin took over as manager in June 2024.
At the beginning of 2024, working alongside Sven Bender as Terzic’s assistant coach.
“We greatly respect Nuri Sahin and his contributions. “Until the very end, we had hoped that we could accomplish a sporting turnaround together, and we hoped for a long-term partnership,” stated Lars Ricken, sporting director of Dortmund.
“This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.”
“Dortmund is weak both mentally and physically.”

In an attempt to turn the squad around and maybe replace Edin Terzic, Nuri Sahin was brought on board at the start of 2024. Although Dortmund’s Champions League final matchup with Real Madrid was Terzic’s final season, the team’s overall performance was disappointing.
Sahin was supposed to offer Dortmund a new identity—one of domination and smart possession football—after Terzic frequently drove the squad into an underdog role.
Sahin, a very inexperienced coach whose sole head coaching position was at Antalyaspor in Turkey, abandoned his original intentions after the first half of this season and returned to a fairly simple style of football.
Dortmund rarely generated any significant chances against fiercely defended clubs, despite having a lot of possession in numerous league games.
A reset was scheduled for the Bundesliga’s Christmas break, which the team hobbled toward.
But Dortmund appeared considerably worse after the three-week layoff. With only a few defenders protecting the area behind seven players, they took enormous chances when attacking, leaving them vulnerable to counterattacks.
Dortmund’s inability to dominate games was once again brought to light by their defeat on Tuesday to Bologna, who are by no means an outstanding team.
Matthias Sammer, who currently advises the club, said during the game in Bologna that the players seemed emotionally and physically weak.
Dortmund will have six managers since 2018 when Sahin is replaced. Although the club’s decision-makers are aware that the players are the true issue, changing the management was, of course, their only viable choice at this time.
This season, nobody on the club has been able to make an impression aside from English winger Jamie Gittens and midfielder Felix Nmecha.
