Another Setback For National Grid

The National Grid has experienced yet another failure, leaving the country in the dark once more.

During the month of October, the grid fell down several times. The Federal Government promised a lasting fix to the embarrassing situation.

The Power Generation Company did not have a single megawatt as of 2:35 p.m., as shown by hourly generation data.

The national power grid had a big problem on October 19, 2024. It was the eighth grid failure of the year, and three of them happened in the same week.

After two days, the grid went down again. What happened was said to be caused by a fire at the Jebba transmission station by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

TCN said that the country had 105 cases of power grid failure.

Ndidi Mbah, the general manager of public affairs for TCN, said, “Clearly, between 2020 and now (five years), we’ve recorded 14 total and six partial grid disturbances, for a total of 20. This is a 76.47 percent reduction in grid disturbances compared to the five years before, from 2015 to 2019, when we had 64 total and 21 partial grid disturbances, for a total of 85 times.”

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said that the constant failures of the national grid were caused by old equipment.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) was upset that grid disturbances were becoming more common and often caused major power outages in several states.

This undid many of the recent progress made in improving grid stability and lowering infrastructure deficit.
