Human rights advocate and 2023 general election presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has endorsed Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, the National Youth Service Corps member who has been under fire for her widely shared video that attacks President Bola Tinubu’s government.
According to a video posted on X on Monday, Sowore had met with Uguamaye in Lagos and would be going with a group of lawyers to the NYSC Local Government Inspector’s office.
“The trip with Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a youth corper, has begun in Lagos.
We will take her to the LGI’s (Local Government Inspector) offices so she can appear before them today. With lawyers, we are all on our way,” Sowore said as the video’s caption.
After sharing a video on TikTok in which she openly criticized Tinubu’s leadership and bemoaned the nation’s deteriorating economic circumstances, the corps member recently went viral.
She then claimed that she had been threatened because of her remarks, which sparked a heated discussion on political dissent and free speech in Nigeria.
The matter has been further escalated by Sowore’s involvement, which has increased awareness of Uguamaye’s case and the possible consequences she could encounter from the NYSC or other authorities.
The NYSC has not yet released an official statement on the subject.
Additionally, she posted a screen grab of an invitation from the NYSC asking her to come to the LGI office at Eti Osa 3 on Monday at 10:00 a.m.
