Bowen University Temporarily Suspends Ongoing Exams After Announcing The Death Of A Student In A Suspected Attack.

According to the administration of Bowen University Community in Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, a student in the college’s College of Management and Social Sciences passed away unexpectedly and is thought to have been attacked.

In a circular released on Thursday by its registrar, B. T. Adetona, the university reported the student’s passing. It stated that the unidentified male student passed away on Wednesday evening.

A portion of the circular stated, “The management of Bowen University regretfully announces the unexplained death of one of our students in the College of Management and Social Sciences last night, Wednesday, 22 January 2025.”

The circular states that at approximately 8:20 PM on Wednesday, a staff member and a few students were en route to one of the university’s residence halls when they spotted the student sprinting in the direction of the staff quarters. He then abruptly passed out and struck his head on the sidewalk.

“On closer examination, it was clear that he had suffered a wound in his abdomen before the fall,” Adetona said.

Security personnel from the university who were positioned close to the generator house/staff quarters and the electricity sub-station indicated that they did not hear or see any indication of an altercation during this period.

The student was taken by ambulance right away to the university hospital. The medical staff, under the direction of the Director of Health Services, examined him further and found further bruises around his neck, which could have been caused by a struggle or defensive wounds.

“He died in the late hours of last night, despite the doctors’ and nurses’ combined efforts.”

Following the incident, it was determined that the student had suffered an injury to his abdomen while traveling to the dorm, according to the Registrar.

That his “last contact was with a friend at the old site of the campus” was also mentioned.

According to the statement, he last spoke with the same known contact at 8:01 PM to let her know that he had not yet arrived at his hostel. She had told him to let her know as soon as he got there, but there was no further word.

After speaking with the identified contact, he was discovered in the staff quarters at around 8:20 p.m.

His personal belongings, including his phone, shoes, cap, and power bank, were found scattered across the road between the staff quarters and the electricity sub-station.

“His movements have been described by those who last saw him, helping Management and the authorities piece together a chronology of events.”

According to him, the student’s family has been notified of the tragic news and the occurrence has been reported to the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council as well as the Visitor to the University.

“To learn more about the circumstances behind this unfortunate tragedy, we are collaborating closely with the police and intelligence team that came on the location of the finding last night. As further information becomes available, it will be shared.

“Management has made the decision to halt the current exams in his honor. The next exam day is Monday, January 27, 2025.
