Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers State, has denied any affiliation with militant organizations and issued a warning against attempts to foment violence or harm the economy in his name.
Fubara revealed this in a statement released in the state capital of Port Harcourt on Monday by Nelson Chukwudi, his chief press secretary.
The governor was responding to viral videos that claimed explosions at gas and oil facilities in the state, calling them “malicious” and “fake.”
He called on security services to look into the films’ origins and prosecute those involved.
The statement read, “Our attention has, once again, been drawn to a flurry of malicious, fake and imaginary videos of purported explosions on oil and gas facilities in Rivers State.
“Virtually all the fake videos have been linked to alleged militant groups in the state, with the creators of such content trying very hard to connect them to supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
“Already, the communities where these incidents are alleged to have occurred have reacted, dismissing any claims of explosions on oil and gas facilities in their domains, and reassuring that all critical government assets within their areas are safe, secure and efficiently functioning.”
The statement said, “A number of malicious, fictitious, and fictitious videos of alleged explosions on oil and gas installations in Rivers State have once again caught our attention.
The makers of the phony videos have made a concerted effort to link them to supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and almost all of them have been connected to purportedly militant organizations in the state.
The municipalities where these accidents are said to have taken place have already responded, denying any reports of explosions on oil and gas installations within their borders and reaffirming that all vital government assets are secure, safe, and operating effectively.
Fubara made it clear that he is not associated with any militant organization and would not support any illegal behavior that may jeopardize economic stability or peace.
For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has no affiliation with any militant group, does not consider any such association, and has no motive to incite any criminal organization or elements, anywhere in the state or Niger Delta, to take any action that would jeopardize public safety and security of oil and gas facilities, and consequently, the nation’s economy.
Since governance and development can only flourish in an environment of peace and security, the governor has stated time and again at every public gathering that maintaining the state’s peace is of utmost importance to him and that he would stop at nothing to ensure its continued stability.
Governor Fubara strongly cautions those who advocate violence and economic sabotage to stay away from the state and refrain from using his name or taking advantage of the current political unrest to incite unrest in the state.
Additionally, he accused people circulating false information online of attempting to sow disarray in the state and urged them to stop.
“Security agencies should take note of these fake videos that are intended to mislead the public and further disparage the state, and take all necessary measures to contain them and hold those responsible accountable,” he said.
