Labour Party: Obi And Otti Plan To Take Over The Party Leadership Through A Backdoor

The Dr. Alex Otti and Mr. Peter Obi, according to the Abure-led Labour Party (LP), are attempting to gain control of the party through deception.

This was said in a statement released by the party’s national secretary, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, in Abuja.

Otti used the party platform to win the governorship of Abia, while Obi represented the party as the presidential nominee in 2023, a year in which the party finished strongly.

The party’s leadership’s outburst is the most recent in a string of crises that have befallen the LP recently.

Following a protracted legal struggle between the Abure camp and Lamidi Apapa-led faction, a stakeholders gathering in Umuahia endorsed Sen. Nenadi Usman as the interim leader of the party.

With the benefit of hindsight, many Nigerians will find it difficult to recall how the Labour Party let some of these leaders stay with them after their previous political parties refused to give them tickets.

Many of these men, who had held multiple political positions before abruptly turning into warriors today and demanding Julius Abure’s head be given on a platter, were rolling around on the ground pleading for tickets.

The leadership of the Labour Party joined our presidential candidate in the trenches, scuttling around Nigeria’s nooks and crannies to gather support.

“Because of our unwavering commitment and uncompromising stand with our Presidential candidate, we were haunted, maligned, and in some cases chased around by agents of the state,” he claimed.

Ifoh claims that Obi and Otti, among others, intend to use the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a springboard in order to seize control of the party’s leadership by dubious means.

“Through thick and thin, defying all kinds of pressure and enduring the political and judicial storms to assure victory, the same LP leadership stuck with our then-candidate for governor of Abia.

“These leaders have no qualms about using the INEC’s illegality as justification to try and take over the party leadership.

“While we do not advocate for Abure or his executive members to hold office indefinitely, we would like to emphasize that the current NWC is the result of a legitimate convention,” Ifoh stated.

Ifoh stated that as he was a national convention product, a new executive would need to be crowned in a different convention in 2008.

We would like to officially record that the party’s national convention, which took place in Nnewi on March 26, 2024, was deemed legitimate by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which is presided over by Justice J.K. Omotosho.

“And one carried out in compliance with the Labour Party Constitution and the 2022 Election Act.”

In a number of rulings, the Supreme Court declared that matters pertaining to delegates sent by a political party to a national convention are not within the purview of any state court since they are party internal matters.

As a result, Ifoh stated, “Not even INEC can de-register the Labour Party as being promoted by some of our leaders.”
