Manchester City is allegedly looking at Viktor Gyokeres, a striker for Sporting CP, as a possible replacement for Erling Haaland. This could make it harder for Arsenal to get the forward they want.
Mirror UK wrote on Wednesday that Gyokeres, who is 26, has been linked with a move to the Emirates. However, City could sign him if Haaland leaves for Real Madrid.
Haaland has been in amazing form since he joined City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022. He has scored 101 goals in 109 games and helped the club win two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, and the Champions League.
Sky Sports, on the other hand, says that Real Madrid wants to sign the Norwegian star Haaland, who is said to want to move to Spain. The story also talks about a €150 million (£125 million) release clause in Haaland’s contract, which is good until 2027.
City has been trying to extend Haaland’s deal, but talks have broken down. He may join Real Madrid in 2026. If this happens, Gyokeres is the most likely person to replace him at the Etihad. He has been very good since joining Sporting from Coventry City last year, scoring 55 goals in 62 games.
City has already talked to Gyokeres’s reps, and Hugo Viana, who is currently Sporting’s director of football, will be joining Manchester City at the end of the season to replace Txiki Begiristain, who has been there for a long time.
From the club’s website, we know for sure that Txiki Begiristain will leave his full-time job as Director of Football at the end of the 2024–25 season.
It also said, “Txiki will leave his current job… and will be replaced by Hugo Viana of Sporting CP after twelve trophy-filled years at the Etihad Stadium.” Viana will start his full-time job in the summer of 2025, but he will work with Txiki in the months before to make sure the change goes smoothly.
Viana has been a key figure at Sporting and has helped them achieve recent success under boss Ruben Amorim. He played 39 Premier League games for Newcastle as a player.
His move to City could make it easier for Gyokeres to move to Manchester, which could hurt Arsenal’s chances of getting the striker.
