Donald Trump has made an announcement on Monday evening at the White House Rose Garden as explosions from tear gas canisters and helicopters could be heard in the background due to protests at the nation’s capital. Trump said he wants mayors and governors to establish ‘an overwhelming law enforcement presence until the violence has been quelled,’ and threatened to ‘deploy the United States military to quickly solve the problem’ if they fail to do so.
The president’s announcement appeared to be a suggestion that he may invoke the of the Insurrection Act of 1807, which is a federal law that ‘governs the ability of the President of the United States to deploy military troops within the United States to suppress civil disorder, insurrection and rebellion ‘I am mobilizing all available federal resources, civilian and military, to stop the rioting and looting, to end the destruction and arson. And to protect the rights of law-abiding Americans, including your Second Amendment rights,’ Trump said. Trump threatens to use the military to stop George Floyd protests.
