Two People Burnt To Death In Anambra Fire Explosion

On Tuesday, two people were burnt to death in a fire explosion at the Odumodu junction, Umunya in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident, which happened around 8.25am along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, involved a tanker loaded with gas and a shuttle bus.

It was gathered that the gas-laden tanker strike with the shuttle bus following a tyre burst resulting in the fire explosion which left two passengers in the bus burnt beyond recognition.

A source said the tanker spilled its contents through the drainage which generated flames and consumed everything on its way.

Verifying the incident  Engr. Dr. Martin Agbili State Director of Fire Service attributed the cause of the fire to tyre burst.

He said his men left the scene after a 3-hour battle with the fire.

“We received a distress call at about 0840hours (8:40 am) on Tuesday 24th May 2022 that a tanker loaded with gas had a burst tyre which resulted in a collision with a shuttle bus that caused the fire explosion at Odumodu Umunya.

“We immediately deployed our firemen to move down to the fire incident scene to extinguish the fire.

“According to eyewitnesses and what we could confirm, two people were burnt to death.

“By the grace of God, the fire was completely extinguished and no other casualties were recorded during the fire fighting,” he said.

Adeoye Irelewuyi, the Sector  Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), who also confirmed the incident, said five male adults were involved in the crash.

He said two of them were killed, while three were rescued unhurt.

He sympathizes with the families of the departed he warned motorists to avoid speeding and ensure they keep to recommend speed limit.
