Defense Headquarters (DHQ) has stated that a new terrorist group called “Lukarawas” has formed and is operating in the northwest of Nigeria. This group is making the already tense security situation in the area even worse, which could have big effects on the safety of the whole country. Major-General Edward Buba, who is in charge of defense media operations, confirmed it at a military meeting in Abuja on November 7, 2024.
After the recent coup in the Republic of Niger, the Lukarawas group is thought to have come from that country. Because of this political instability, Nigeria and Niger’s militaries stopped working together. This created a security hole that terrorists have used. In the past, both countries worked together to patrol their borders, which made it harder for terrorist groups to move between them. But because of the coup in Niger, these joint operations had to stop. This gave the Lukarawas group a chance to move into the northern parts of Sokoto and Kebbi States as well as other rural areas along the Niger-Mali axis.
They have been able to move easily across rough terrain, spreading their ideas and getting a foothold in some of northwest Nigeria’s less accessible and remote areas by taking advantage of gaps in cooperation between security forces. The people in the area accepted the group at first because they didn’t know what their real goals were. They thought they were there to help or support. People trusted the terrorists because of this mistake, and they didn’t tell the security services that they were there. The military was not able to react quickly to the threat because intelligence wasn’t shared at the right time.
In response to the growing danger, General Buba told the people of Nigeria that the military had stepped up its efforts to find and stop the Lukarawas group. To find and kill the terrorists, the military has been using a mix of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) activities. Although these steps are being taken, the group is still using large, poorly controlled areas as cover to avoid being caught by the military. Because these areas are often hard to get to because of their rough terrain and lack of government presence, terrorists have been able to keep running their operations and keep control over some areas.
The military has been trying to get rid of the terrorists, but it’s been hard because the group can hide in these places and some locals don’t report their moves. In addition to attacking and scaring people in the area, the terrorists have been harassing and striking people to spread fear and gain more power. The Nigerian military is still working on the problem. They have been able to find and kill some members of the group, but the situation as a whole is still very tough.
This new event brings to light the bigger problem of unstable regional security. What’s happening in Niger has a direct effect on Nigeria. Not only did the coup in Niger make that country less stable, but it also spread instability to nearby countries like Nigeria, which extremist groups used to grow their influence. Because the borders between Nigeria, Niger, and Mali are not very solid and the terrain is rough, it is hard for security forces to keep these groups from moving around and stop the spread of terrorism.
Multiple terrorist groups are now fighting for power and control in northwest Nigeria, which is made more dangerous by the rise of the Lukarawas group. This rising instability is a major threat to the safety and way of life of the people who live in these areas, as well as to Nigeria’s overall stability. Terrorist groups are able to operate in the area because neither the local nor the national governments have been able to take control of these areas, which have been ignored for a long time when it comes to growth and safety.
To deal with these dangers, Nigeria will need to work together with its neighbors on security more, especially since its relationship with Niger has broken down. Not only would better sharing of intelligence and coordinated military actions be needed, but money would also need to be spent to improve government in the affected areas. Many of these places aren’t well developed and don’t have a strong government presence, which leaves them open to extremist forces. Nigeria may continue to have trouble stopping the spread of terrorism and keeping its people safe if these root reasons are not fixed.
The military is still trying to get rid of the Lukarawas group, but to solve the bigger problem of insecurity in the northwest, they will need to take a more thorough approach. To keep these areas from turning into safe havens for terrorist groups, this includes both military and non-military answers, like making local government, infrastructure, and community involvement better. The northwest of Nigeria is still in a dangerous state, and unless big changes are made, the country could continue to face rising crime rates in the years to come.
