Gunmen, who are thought to be bandits, have attacked several communities in Zamfara State and taken more than 100 people hostage. Among them are women, children, and the elderly. The attack took place in the Wanke area, which is close to Gusau, which is the capital of the state.
The Chief Imam of the community was one of the people who were caught. He had been abducted by the same group before and was still recovering from the injuries he got during that capture. The Imam has been taken twice now.
People in the areas that were attacked went into a state of panic and ran away in all directions to escape being abducted. Survivors said the thieves moved quickly on motorbikes, going after people and forcing them into the bush. They went after different villages, like Sabon Layi, Dogon Hayi, Gira, Ruwa Kusa, and Gidan Kado, and stole expensive things like motorcycles, farm goods, and personal items like smartphones. A lot of shops in the area were also broken into.
The survivors talked about how scared and chaotic the towns were during the attack. They also said that it was hard to figure out how widespread the kidnapping was because of all the chaos and confusion. It is said that more than 50 people were taken from the Sabon Layi area and about the same number were taken from Dogon Hayi. The exact number is still unknown because many villagers were running for safety, and the government hasn’t shared official numbers about what happened yet.
Even though alerts were sent to Wanke’s local government, the government or security agencies had not made an official comment or response by the time of the report. The towns feel unsafe and alone because the government hasn’t done anything to help. The survivors were angry that no one was doing anything about it, since many of them had been through attacks like this for almost nine years. People from the villages who were able to get away from the violence have gone to Gusau and other safer places to stay.
People in Zamfara and nearby states have had a hard time with their daily lives because these attacks keep happening. They have been going on for years. People can’t do their normal farming tasks because they are afraid of being attacked or taken away. Animals, which used to be an important part of the local business, have also been lost in large numbers. Wildlife is being stolen or killed by thieves, leaving many families without a way to make a living.
This new attack shows how unsafe the area is still; armed groups are still terrorizing rural areas without being caught. People who are kidnapped often demand a ransom, but even if the ransom is paid, there is no promise that the victims will be freed safely. When thieves kidnap people in remote areas, they often do so with a lot of weapons and a lot of freedom, taking advantage of the rough terrain and the lack of security forces.
People have said that the government’s reaction to the rising violence is not working because bandits are still attacking even though the military has been trying for a long time to stop them. Many people in the area are getting more and more angry at the security forces because they don’t seem to be able to stop these attacks or catch the criminals. The government has been slow to deal with the problems that lead to banditry, such as unemployment, poverty, and the easy access to small guns in the area.
As things get worse, more people are being forced to leave their homes, adding to the large number of people who have already been forced to leave their homes in the region. People are fleeing rural places because they don’t feel safe there. They are going to cities like Gusau, where they feel somewhat safe. Some people live in towns, but they are still afraid of bandit attacks, and they are always worried.
The fact that more than 100 people were taken hostage in one attack is a sobering reminder of how unsafe Zamfara State and the places around it are. These attacks and kidnappings are making the humanitarian situation worse; whole communities are being torn apart by violence. People who lived through the most recent attack are still scared, and many of them don’t know when or if the violence will stop. The situation is getting worse and worse, and we need to act right away to fix the problems that are causing bandits to act and bring peace back to the area. Until then, the people of Zamfara and the other states affected will always be at risk of being harmed or kidnapped.
