Following Nancy Mace’s transgender resolution, House Speaker Mike Johnson refuses to state if Rep.-elect McBride is a man or a woman.
When asked if transgender Representative-elect Sarah McBride, D-Del., is a man or a woman, House Speaker Mike Johnson declined, promising to “treat all persons with dignity and respect.”
“Is freshman elect Sarah McBride a man or a woman?” a reporter asked Johnson during Tuesday’s House GOP weekly press conference.
“Look, I won’t talk about this. As legitimately elected representatives of the people, we extend a warm welcome to all new members,” Johnson said. “I think we have a duty to treat everyone with respect and decency, and we will. I’m also not going to get involved in pointless arguments about this. Concerns have been raised regarding the utilization of locker rooms, restrooms, and other amenities. Congress has never had to deal with this subject before. And we’re going to do that consciously, with agreement from all members. We will also make accommodations for each individual’s needs.
Johnson was asked if he intended to bring up a resolution introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., to prohibit transgender women from using women’s restrooms at the U.S. Capitol “and putting that into the rules package” by Fox News Radio Capitol Hill and White House correspondent Ryan Schmelz.
Johnson declared, “I’m not going to address the plans on any of that,” “I already told you what I would say about the matter. I will not participate in this. No one is denigrated by us. Everyone is treated with respect and decency by us. I have lived my entire life adhering to that philosophy. And just as with everything else, we will take care of this problem, you know, a first impression for Congress. Every member of Congress will receive the proper accommodations from us.
On Monday, Mace presented a motion that would forbid House staff, officers, and members from participating in “single-sex facilities other than those corresponding to their biological sex.” It argues that “allowing biological males into single-sex facilities, such as restrooms, locker rooms, and changing rooms designed for women jeopardizes the safety and dignity of Members, officers, and employees of the House who are female.”
McBride criticized the resolution in Monday’s X postings, calling it “a blatant attempt from far right-wing extremists to distract from the fact that they have no real solutions to what Americans are facing.”
“Every day Americans go to work with people who have life journeys different than their own and engage with them respectfully, I hope members of Congress can muster that same kindness,” added McBride.
“The radical left is calling me an extremist for being a feminist fighting to protect the rights of women and girls,” Mace stated in a video statement that was shared with X on Tuesday. “If being a feminist makes me an extremist or bigot or a monster, I am totally here for it because I am going to fight like hell for every woman and every little girl across this country to protect you and to keep you safe.”
“I asked the men in the House Republican Conference what they were going to do to stop biological males from using spaces that are designated for biological females at the U.S. Capitol,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., stated Tuesday.
“As a biological man, Sarah McBride, as he refers to himself, was once Tim McBride. As such, he should not be using any of the facilities in the Capitol, let alone our office buildings. Greene told reporters, “But Nancy Mace’s resolution doesn’t go far enough.” “America stated in this election that they are tired of the trans ideology being forced onto us, in addition to being tired of uncontrolled borders, invasions, unchecked inflation, and foreign conflicts. Additionally, it is a nationwide assault on women and children.
The Democratic caucus is “100%” in favor of McBride, Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., told reporters as he denounced the motion introduced by Mace.
Garcia said, “It’s just disgusting,” to reporters. “When I read that yesterday, I was truly nauseous. And I believe that the fact that someone is being attacked is quite regrettable. She arrived at Congress just now. Whatever restroom she needs to use, she will use it. It’s so annoying that we have to have this discussion. To be honest, I’ve heard disgust from both sides of the debate. Therefore, I’m hoping that this simply proceeds and that we allow her to pass legislation and go on.”
