There were 72,138 examiners hired on-the-spot for the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). The National Examinations Council (NECO) stated that they had paid their allowances. Recent rumors said that the council had purposely held payments up. The council clarified that there were delays because some inspectors gave the wrong bank information, which caused technical problems. These problems slowed down the payment process for a short time, but they were fixed in time for the full payment to be made.
NECO said that it started handling the payments on October 4, 2024, and finished them in a planned way by November 13, 2024. Payments were made on a structured schedule that went to one bank at a time to make sure that all the transactions were properly matched up and nothing went wrong. The council stated that all outstanding allowances had been paid out now that this process was over.
It was said by NECO that the claims making the rounds on social media that the council had purposely not paid the inspectors were not true. The council said these claims were not true and were meant to mislead. They stressed that any questions or worries about payments should be directed to NECO for answers instead of being shared with the public. NECO told its examiners and ad hoc staff that it appreciates their work and that making sure they get paid on time is a top goal for the council. The council is always working to keep its processes open and professional, and this promise is part of that.
In talking about the payment problems, NECO also said that the delays weren’t because of a lack of money or an attempt to avoid paying. Instead, they were caused by mistakes in logistics and administration, especially people giving the wrong bank information. The council did something quickly to fix the problem, and all payments have now been processed properly.
Large groups like NECO have a hard time coordinating complicated tasks like paying thousands of examiners in many banks. This event shows those problems. Even though there are problems, NECO has said again that it will make sure that everyone who works on the exams is paid properly and on time. The council quickly solved the problem, which shows that it cares about keeping good working relationships with its staff and making sure the integrity of its testing processes.
Finally, NECO’s treatment of the payment process, despite some problems at first, shows that it is committed to being open and accountable. The council also said again that if there are any future concerns about payments or other issues, they should be brought up directly with NECO so that they can be answered right away, instead of being driven by rumors or false information.
