The rate of suicide has become very alarming that it should be looked into with all sense awareness. Suicide as we all know is the act of taking one’s life. It is not a mental illness in itself, but a serious potential consequence of treatable mental disorders that include major depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder e.t.c.
Suicidal behavior refers to talking about or taking actions related to ending one’s own life.
However, there are some warning signs or rather behavioral signs everyone should look out for to help save the victim. Would discuss 7 of them which includes:
1.) Changes in personality and/or appearance:
A person who is considering suicide might exhibit a change in attitude or behavior, such as speaking or moving with unusual speed or slowness. In addition, the person might suddenly become less concerned about their personal appearance.
2.) Withdrawal:
Choosing to be alone and avoiding friends or social activities also are possible symptoms of depression, a leading cause of suicide. This includes the loss of interest or pleasure in activities the person previously enjoyed.
3.) Hopelessness:
Feeling a deep sense of hopelessness about the future, with little expectation that circumstances can improve.
4.) Dangerous or self-harmful behavior:
Potentially dangerous behavior, such as reckless driving, engaging in unsafe sex, and increased use of drugs and/or alcohol might indicate that the person no longer values their life.
5.) Recent trauma or life crisis:
A major life crises might trigger a suicide attempt. Crises include the death of a loved one or pet, divorce or break-up of a relationship, diagnosis of a major illness, loss of a job, or serious financial problems.
6.) Threatening or talking about suicide:
From 50% to 75% of those considering suicide will give someone, a friend, or relative a warning sign. However, not everyone who is considering suicide will say so, and not everyone who threatens suicide will follow through with it. Every threat of suicide should be taken seriously.
7.) Excessive sadness or moodiness:
Long-lasting sadness, mood swings, and unexpected rage.
It can feel scary, but taking action and getting someone the help they need may help prevent a suicide attempt or death. Hence, i will be discussing ways in which you can profer help to a suicide victim.
How To Talk To Someone Who Is Feeling Suicidal
If you suspect that a family member or friend may be considering suicide, talk to them about your concerns. You can begin the conversation by asking questions in a non-judgmental and non-confrontational way.
Talk openly and don’t be afraid to ask direct questions, such as “Are you thinking about suicide?”
Make sure not to minimize their problems or attempts at shaming them into changing their mind. Listening and showing your support is the best way to help them.
In some cases, the person just needs to know that someone cares and is looking for the chance to talk about their feelings. You can then encourage the person to seek professional help.
During the conversation, make sure you:
- 1. Stay calm and speak in a reassuring tone
- 2. Acknowledge that their feelings are legitimate
- 3.Offer support and encouragement
- 4.Tell them that help is available and that they can feel better with treatment
