Daniele De Rossi, the legendary coach of the club, was fired by Roma on Wednesday. The Serie A team’s dismal start to the season has left them winless and lingering close to the relegation zone.
Following Jose Mourinho’s dismissal in January, Roma confirmed in a statement that former Italy midfielder De Rossi “has been relieved of his duties” after just eight months in command.
Roma released a statement saying, “The club’s decision is made in the best interests of the team, to get back on the desired path as soon as possible at this early point in the season.”
Following De Rossi’s firing, Roma stated that “communication regarding the team’s technical guidance will follow.” On Wednesday morning, De Rossi was videotaped grinning and signing autographs with supporters as he left the club’s Trigoria training facility.
De Rossi was fired from his boyhood club, with whom he signed a deal until 2027 in June, despite the fact that the team finished fourth in Serie A with three points after four games. De Rossi won the World Cup with Italy in 2006.
The abrupt dismissal follows Roma’s 1-1 draw with Genoa on Sunday, where they lost a chance at their first victory of the season in the closing moments of play.
Ivan Juric, who most recently led Torino, and Massimiliano Allegri are two coaches that could succeed De Rossi, according to Italian media reports.
Roma supporters hold De Rossi in high regard as a hometown hero who, along with another legend Francesco Totti, was a member of some of the team’s greatest squads throughout the previous 20 years.
A local hero
Despite without trophies, the 41-year-old won over fans with his passionate style of play on the field. He grew up in a gritty and tumble coastal district of Rome.
After spending less than a season in Argentina, he concluded his career at Boca Juniors in early 2020, having won two Italian Cups and the 2007 Italian Super Cup.
Given that De Rossi’s sole prior managing experience was four months at lower league team SPAL, he had been an unexpected temporary replacement for Mourinho.
He was fired in February of the previous year, after a season that saw SPAL drop to the third division of Serie C.
But he made a spectacular debut as Roma’s manager, bringing vitality to a club that had grown lifeless under Mourinho and leading them to the Europa League semifinals, where they were eliminated by German champions Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 on aggregate.
In the two rounds prior, De Rossi had guided Roma to two outstanding victories over Brighton and AC Milan, and for a small while, it appeared as though he might lead them to Champions League qualification for the first time since 2019.
Despite Serie A having five spots available for direct qualifying, Roma’s performance declined towards the end of the previous season, and they were eliminated from Europe’s premier club competition.
That, together with just three draws and one loss from their four league games this season against generally unimpressive opponents, cost De Rossi his job less than three months after he pledged his future to Roma.
