Around Botokiri Creek in Bayelsa State, Nigerian Navy personnel are apprehending a wooden boat that is loaded with an undisclosed quantity of pilfered crude oil.
In the last nine months in the Niger Delta, the Nigerian Navy’s Operation Delta Sanity said that its soldiers had demolished 124 illicit processing installations and taken 55 people into custody who were thought to be oil thieves.
This was revealed during a briefing in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, by Rear Adm. Samson Bura, the Flag Officer Commanding of the Central Naval Command.
According to Bura, six vessels were detained during the operation, and 64 storage tanks, 543 dugout pits, and 116 wooden boats were destroyed.
He added that the operations were carried out in compliance with current legislation and that a number of objects and pieces of machinery used in the construction of illicit refineries had been seized.
He said that the accomplishment had a good effect on the country’s oil production, which was now producing 1.7 million barrels per day.
He continued by saying that the accomplishment represents a major rise from the about 1.3 million barrels per day in June 2024.
According to him, the Nigerian Navy’s Maritime Domain Awareness facilities, intelligence, and kinetic operations have all been utilized to undertake Navy operations.
“Other non-kinetic strategies include community participation, media, education outreach, and medicine, among other areas.
“The Chief of Naval Staff has generously granted the extension of Operation Delta Sanity for an additional ninety days, beginning on October 10, 2024, based on the accomplishments and successes reported thus far.
He declared, “These efforts will be maintained to guarantee that there is no room for crude oil theft in the country’s maritime environment.”
He also expressed gratitude to the press, other well-meaning Nigerians, youth, community leaders, and other security agencies for their ongoing support in the battle against oil theft.
