Growing waters have flooded many homes in Borno, putting inhabitants on high alert as Maiduguri experiences its worst flooding since 1994.
The Alau Dam, which has been overflowing for the previous week, is said to be to blame for the disaster.
The affected districts should be evacuated immediately, according to a statement released early on Tuesday by Prof. Usman Tar, Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, headlined “Flooding Alert for River Bank Residents.”

Tar also advised locals to follow approved evacuation routes in order to ensure their safety.
“We urge all the residents living along the river bank to take immediate action to protect themselves and their properties due to the unusually high volume of water this year,” he said.
“Water from the Alau Dam is rushing toward the riverbank, rupturing yet another channel and presently destroying farms.”
The last time the dam had a problem like this, according to NAN, was in 1994, which caused catastrophic floods that buried over half of Maiduguri.
Hundreds of families have been forced to sleep outside as a result of the tragedy, according to the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), with many of them spotted frantically trying to recover what little they could. Most residents are unable to reach their homes as a result of the damage that has devastated entire neighborhoods along the riverbanks.
Nigeria has recently experienced flooding. A number of states, particularly in the north, have seen flash floods in recent weeks that have destroyed buildings, farmlands, and lives.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), recent floods in 27 states have devastated about 16,488 hectares of crops. Furthermore, figures from emergency organizations indicate that approximately 227,000 individuals were affected and over 32,000 houses were destroyed.

Up to 51% of Nigeria’s farming lands are under risk of flooding in 2024, according to Sen. Abdullahi Sabi Aliyu, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security. Sen. Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, issued a warning that the current floods will have a detrimental impact on this year’s projected harvest.
Attempts to alleviate the flooding. Wale Edun, the minister of finance and coordination of the economy, suggested giving N3 billion to the flood-affected states in an effort to lessen the severity of the tragedy.
In addition, the United States has committed more than $6.5 million to aiding Nigerian flood relief operations through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). According to USAID, the money will help regional partners—such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM)—deal with the severe flooding that is plaguing several areas of the nation.
